How to Make a QR Code

It's so easy to make your own QR code. All you need to do is find a free QR code generator, enter some information, and click create, and your own QR codes will be available in seconds. Just follow the instructions in any of the following generators you wish to use. Some have more capabilities than others, but all of these are completely free to use.

Kaywa QR Code Generator: This is my favorite generator. It will encode a URL, text, a phone number, or an SMS. It's very easy to use; just enter the information into the box after selecting what type of code you would like to make. You can also change the size of the final QR code.

Easy QR Code Generator: This site has a video clip from the Early Show that discusses the purpose of QR codes. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, to get to the free generator. Select the type of QR code you would like to make: contact, text, SMS, URL, email, phone number. Enter the information asked underneath. (i.e. If you selected phone number, it will ask you to enter a phone number.)

Qurify: Here you can type in any message you would like (up to 255 characters), and click qurify! Then you can download your QR code that is linked to your personal message.

QR Stuff: Free QR Code Generator: This generator allows you to make a wide variety of QR codes. Use can use a website URL, YouTube video, Google Maps location, a social media site, telephone number, iTunes link, plain text, an SMS message, contact details, events, Paypal Buy Now links, and Wifi login. What's really cool about this generator is that you can change the color of the QR code. I haven't come across many colored ones, so this is a great way for your QR code to stand out.

Quick QR: This generator uses a URL or text that you write to create a QR code. Once scanned the code will take someone to the URL you put in or open the text that you wrote.

Top Ten Free Online QR Code Generators: Here's a list of the top ten QR code generators, and they are all 100% free.

What to do with your customized QR code?

  • Print stickers! You can by sticker paper at your local craft store and print out your own customized QR code stickers to stick anywhere you want.
  • Make a t-shirt. There's a few sites out there that will print your personal QR code on t-shirts, hats, and other clothes.
  • Post it on your blog, website, or Facebook. Let all of your friends and web viewers easily access your code.
  • Make new business cards. Put you're a QR code linking to your resume, your LinkedIn webpage, or your contact information on your business card.
  • Help out your business or a friend's business. Make a QR code to promote a business by having it link to promotions, company information, coupons, product information, or anything else that has to do with the business. This will help others quickly learn more about what you are selling or offering.
  • Make a temporary tattoo. Some sites will let you print your customized QR code as a temporary tattoo. You can hand these out to anyone you'd like and they can all have your QR code on their skin for a couple of days. You could also get a real tattoo of your QR code, but I'd recommend that you really love it before going that far.

What is a QR Code?

QR (quick response) codes were invented to be scanned and decoded very quickly. I've only first seen them showing up mid-2011, but they've actually been around for much longer.
